I am a native brazilian living in the US for the last three years. I started teaching portuguese after some american friends asked me to. One thing led to another and even not having any formal education in teaching I had 7 students in NY where I used to live before moving to Miami a couple of months ago. I would say that my "teaching method" depends a lot on the student, if he already speaks or writes some portuguese, I will work with him on accent (and as I speak english it is easier because I show them words with the same phonetics in english, it makes it easier for them) and increasing vocabulary. If the person is starting from zero, I also start with the very basics, as how to say the most important things if you are traveling to Brazil, how to communicate in various environments (restaurant, airport, taxi, hotel, etc...) and then move on to verbs, which are the most difficult for english speakers. I have a baby and would love to teach from home and on my own schedule. Thanks for reading this looong post!
