Modern Languages at Leeds: The University of Leeds has more language undergraduates than any other UK university. The number of Joint Honours programmes involving modern languages (over 290 of them) is probably also greater than anywhere else. Most of our programmes contain at least one language as a named subject, occupy four years and include at least one year abroad. The only exceptions are Joint Honours programmes featuring non-language subjects taught by a modern languages department, such as Russian Civilisation. en languages can currently form a named part of a Joint Honours (Modern Languages) degree at Leeds. These are: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, and Spanish. The following are also normally available, as elective subjects, etc.: Berber, Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch, Modern Greek, Hebrew, Mongolian, Norwegian, Polish, Punjabi, and Urdu.
